Escritora estadounidense. Se crió en China con sus padres misioneros, y más tarde enseñó inglés en una universidad china. Su primer libro de resonancia fue La buena tierra (1931, Premio Pulitzer), novela que describe la lucha por la vida de un campesino chino y su esposa esclava. Le seguirían Hijos (1932) y Un hogar dividido (1935) y la trilogía se publicaría como tal con el título The House of Earth [La casa de Tierra] (1935). Entre sus últimas obras se cuentan relatos, novelas (cinco de ellas bajo el seudónimo John Sedges) y una autobiografía. Se le concedió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1938.
